The Meeting Day idea was inspired by the author Paul Jarvis, who reveals in his book Company of One that he would batch meetings on Thursday, allowing him to engage in “focused” and “uninterrupted” work the other days. I found this concept quite interesting so I did my favorite thing, experimentation.

My meeting day is on Thursday, I would schedule meetings, meetups, gatherings and such all on the day, and man didn’t it make life much simpler. I freed up more time to engage and focus on the critical work: product development, content creation, writing. In the past, I used to have meetings spread across the week, oftentimes I would be in a conference call every evening. Although it worked fine, I always felt this subtle discontinuity which I later found out was basically interrupted work, because I had to take a portion of time to prepare or conduct meetings everyday.

A meeting haul may sound intense and unrealistic at first, but as the author puts it, we are responsible for guarding our schedule and maintaining quality time for deep, engaging work. Having meetings spread across the week or without thoughtful management, is essentially putting ourselves in a constant state of distractions and discontinuity. This not only slows down efficiency, but also takes away time and energy for the “real important work” that actually delivers results. In addition, I have come to realize that batching improves meeting performance, as the momentum builds up with each call, and since the focus of the day is having meetings, you won’t be distracted by other responsibilities or requests.

However, this is not to say that we leave no flexibility in our schedule and ask others to cooperate always. It is a suggestion that we can all have meetings more strategically, thereby creating quality work time consciously.

Because trust me, even just one day without meetings makes a HUGE difference.

Try it out yourself!

Pick a day as your Meeting Day for meetings, meetups, gatherings etc. Flexibility is totally allowed so no stress. But if you have the chance to decide or you are the one in charge of scheduling, stick with your meeting day.
